Looking up from the Autopsy Table

So today was our last day in Los Angeles, which is actually really depressing.  With the silly rainy weather, however, maybe it isn’t such a bad thing.

The first thing we did today was meet with NBC Universal Human Resources department.  We met with the a woman who works with internship applications.  She told us about how to apply for internships and what she looks for in resumes and cover letters.

After that we met with NBC scheduling and development of TV shows.  It was way more complicated than I ever imagined it would be! It was very interesting to see how the development of the internet market for television played into their careers as well.

After that we had lunch and then got a mini tour of the backlot.  Next we met with CSI and got to tour their sets.  The guy who took us around was nice enough to let us take pictures and we got to pretend to be dead bodies in the autopsy room.  Good times.

Later we went to Focus Features and met with the publicity department.  They discussed how all of their movies are very different content wise and therefore are very different by publicity wise.  We also got to talk with them about how youth are viewing movie trailers these days.  We also got some free t-shirts from the movies they have promoted.

Our last stop for the day was meeting with a entertainment lawyer in Century City.  He gave us a lot of insights on the other side of the industry.  It was really interesting to hear how he helps his clients draft contracts and finances.

We had dinner and the headed back to the hotel where we met with an alum who is working in LA.  He was very funny and helpful about how to assert yourself without going overboard.

Anyways, we leave for NC tomorrow, back to cold weather and classes!  Look for some more pictures from the trip soon!

Dream Jobs and Front Row Leno Seats

Okay, so yesterday we went to Universal Studios: Hollywood theme park.  It rained, or more like tsunami-ed ALL MORNING… it was kind of sucky… but by 1ish in the afternoon it stopped, but our shoes were already soaking wet and the rest of the day was pretty miserable.  We still had fun for the most part though.  Since it was rainy we got to go on about anything we wanted, no lines, so that was good.

Fellows on The Mummy!

After the theme park we went to dinner on the City Walk at Wolfgang Puck Bistro, it was yums.

Today we started off the day meeting with ABC World News correspondent Brian Rooney.  He was very interesting to speak with about the changing media sources and other fun information.  We really wanted to break into the Grey’s Anatomy sound stage next door, but we didn’t…

After that we went to Dreamworks Animation and learned how they make animated movies.  The campus was stunning even in the rain, it had beautiful architecture and was really new and clean.  We also got a FREE lunch in the cafeteria, which was super, super good!! They had salmon and yummy Dreamworks cupcakes! All their employees eat for free everyday.  So, I decided that I definitely want to work at Dreamworks now!!

After that we went to the Jay Leno Show where we got to sit FRONT ROW! It was a really cool show and we got to take a picture with Jay before the show.  He remembered us and then ask us to stay after the show and we got to ask him questions for over a half hour!!  We also met with the producer and then ended up going to his restaurant for dinner!

Polaroid with Jay Leno

Then we got to head back to the hotel for the earliest time yet, although we are staying up to watch ourselves on Leno!

I’m a bird: It rains in SoCal.

So, I didn’t post yesterday, but there wasn’t much exciting to report.  We spent the day in the hotel having various speakers and then we went to a party with our alumni.  It was pretty fun.

Today was our day to be crazy tourists. We started off our day at the Griffith Observatory, a historic landmark of Los Angeles.  It was very cool and had some great old architecture as well as a fantastic view of downtown LA.  There were amazing exhibits inside about the planets, but we didn’t get to stay very long.

After that we went to the Hollywood Sign.  We had to drive through this incredible neighborhood where the houses were all built into hills on several levels, it was so cool.  We took lots of pictures with the sign, but here is a nice group shot.

After that we drove through other places in LA including Muholland Drive, Doheny Mansion, Beverly Hills and others.  We drove by the Beverly Hills hotel as well as the Beverly Hilton, where the Golden Globes were tonight!  Although we didn’t see any celebs, we saw lots of limos!  It started raining really badly after lunch and for the rest of the night, which made for sort of a bummer evening.

We headed to Santa Monica after that for sunset, except since it was raining there wasn’t any sun to see.  We had fun on the beach anyways though…

Then we got onto the pier, where we had more adventures in the rain!

Then we had dinner on Elon at Bubba Gump which was nice before heading back to the hotel for some much needed rest!

It is supposed to rain all day tomorrow as well.  We are going to Universal Theme Park!  Should be fun anyway!

Getting Swag

We started our day today at Warner Bros. by walking through the backlot.  We got to see the set of Gilmore Girls, ER, and many others! After that we walked through the set of the TV show Chuck.  We got to see the Buymore and also the apartment complex.  The sets were so much bigger and more intricate that I would have ever thought they were!

After that we met with many people in Post-Production sound.  We got to see mixing audio as well as foley, where they make sound effects.  Next we went and saw some digital imaging where they do color correction and also where they take film off and convert it to digital.  We also got to go in one of the vaults where they store all the film reels from previous movies.  Here is a picture of me with Lord of the Rings!

We got lunch after that at the WB cafe and then got to go into the WB museum.  It was really cool because we got to see lots of costumes from Batman, Sweeney Todd, Gossip Girl, The Departed and most of all HARRY POTTER!!!!!  There was a whole floor dedicated to HP and it was incredibly fabulous!!

After that we went to The CW and met with the guy who does online promotions. He showed us lots of promotions that he helped distribute for shows like Gossip Girl, Supernatural, Smallville and Vampire Diaries!  Then he gave us posters and bags made from old billboards.

After that we met with the woman who does Worldwide Marketing for WB.  She gave us a lot of insight on how to market to foreign countries and how the films can change.  She also discussed the upcoming trend to 3D and how that will become marketable!

Finally we met with WB interactive, which deals with the promotions for video games.  It was interesting to see how that differs from the release of films or TV.

In the evening we had some free time and also met with Gil to discuss how to finance an independent feature film!

Real Diamonds and Fake Cities

So today we spent our time on the Paramount Pictures lot.  There were a lot of really cool sound stages and different props lying around that we got to look at.

The first person we met with was Josh Jack who is in charge of guest relations and the Paramount Page program.  He gave us a lot of good tips on resume building and how to secure a job in the industry.

Next we met with Denise Luiso who worked on music for movies.  She told us about how they go about choosing songs for films and also about how to get the rights and about how much everything costs.  It was really cool to hear about all the bands she has worked with and really see someone who is passionate about her business!

After that we met with John Soriano who is a story analyst for scripts and ideas.  One of his jobs is to read scripts and make summaries of the plot and then suggest ways to make the script stronger.  He then decides whether to pass it on to the next level or not.  He also works on projects that deal further with the production from a writing standpoint.

Next we met Doug Finberg.  He is in charge of international marketing for Marvel and used to work at Dreamworks in the same field.  He talked to us about how culture plays into the marketing of a film and how films can do better or worse in international markets due to the way they are presented.  At Marvel he also deals with the arrangements to make the action figures and toys for distribution with the films.

After that we got lunch at the Paramount cafe and then walked around the lot some more.  We went over to the backlot and accidentally walked through a Black Eyed Peas music video shoot, which was super cool!! After we found out what it was we tried to sneak back in, but they wouldn’t let us.  Oh well!  They were shooting on the fake NYC set.

Then we met with Keegan Heise who works on the show The Doctors.  She talked to us about her move to LA as well as what she does on the show.  We got to tour the offices of the show and even see one of the doctors themselves!!

Lastly we met with two men who worked on marketing and publicity for CBS TV.  They didn’t really inform us about what they did, but we had a really great conversation about how TV is changing and the future of the industry.

After we left the lot we went down to the Hollywood Walk of fame and Mann’s Chinese Theatre, where the handprints are!  I got this sweet picture with the cast of Harry Potter!

After that we went to dinner and then got to go shopping at H&M!! Then we shot this cool video… it is really bad quality, but I’m sure it is entertaining!
